Why ‘spaces’ help our memory
Spaces help our memory.
You know those times when you walked out of a room to do something and then forgot what it was?
It’s only when you got back into the room that it triggers your memory?!
Is this not quite facinating...
Another example…
You go back to visit the school you went to and all the memories start flooding back…
And, a little recent anecdote from myself -
I was at dance class this week, learning a new dance, when we were suddenly shifted into the dance space next door.
The confusion!
My memory of the dance routine was challenged simply by being in a different space.
Again, FACINATING.
The connection between spaces and memories is however well documented.
It is believed to relate to our core biology -
As hunter gatherers for example, there were 2 key things we needed for our survival.
Our visual memory, say to remember which foods were safe or not safe to eat.
And our spatial memory, say to remember where the food was, where our shelter was and where they were in relation to one another.
This is why memory techniques are based around our typically natural memory for images and spaces!
