Enjoy reflecting - 6 tips
Do you have those moments when someone asks you what you did on the weekend and you struggle to remember…
(When it’s only Monday!?)
It’s certainly something I’ve been familiar with.
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the moment to moment, with all that might be going on activity wise or in our head.
Or, we might not have been focusing or challenging our brain much recently.
Maybe we’ve been lucky enough to have been on a nice long holiday.
There could all sorts of reasons but it happens from time to time.
And it’s ok.
If you’re like me, here’s my 6 simple reflection tips to help!
Take a ‘mundane’ moment
You might do this while sitting quietly with a cuppa or while on the go - any ‘mundane’ time of the day!
It could be as you head to your car in the garage or carpark, as you make your bed or as you brush your teeth.
Depending on where you choose and if you need extra focus, you might even like to close your eyes in the process.
Enjoy it!
What would you like to reflect on?
The weekend? The day so far? The prior day? Or something new you’ve learnt for example.
This is also a great opportunity for gratitude or to identify learnings and opportunities.
Push your brain (*just a little)
If you feel some resistance with this, it’s normal.
Our brain is wired to stay comfortable. We get so used to our usual way of operating it can be challenging to use our brain in a new way.
Be aware of this however know things can only change if we change.
Push your brain just a little to do the thing it doesn’t want to but that you know is going to be good for it!
Find your edge.
Keep calm and believe
Keep calm, positive and believe you can do it, because you can!
Be kind to yourself and have patience
It’s ok if you aren’t able to recall things straight away, or if you can only recall a few things.
With the recollection of details one thing can often lead to the next!
It all takes time, patience and practise.
Celebrate
Give yourself a pat yourself on the back (literally or metaphorically!) for taking the time out to reflect.
You are brightening your brain simply by starting with this positive intention and then strengthening those connections in your brain to quicken your recall.
Here’s a personal example:
This morning sitting in the sun with a cup of tea I made a spontaneous but intentional decision to reflect on the prior day, which included -
The theme of the guided meditation I listened to first thing and yoga video, the work and study I went through and the dance routine from a class the night before.
I still had to push my brain a little to do this with the fear of not being able to remember in the background, but it was actually an enjoyable and satisfying process when I did.
I could celebrate what I did recall and it also highlighted what I might like to refresh my memory on.
To summarise…
Every reflective moment matters and a little a day goes a long way!
