Still remember that name…

A simple example of remembering a name.

Somewhat recently, I was reading a story about a local author with a young group.

I told them, I’m going to remember the name of this author, I’ll tell you how I’ll remember it and you can feel free to test me in future.

Here was the ‘how’:

The author’s name firstly?

Helen Griffiths.

I asked myself and came up with the following:

  • What does the name Helen bring to mind?

    = I knew a couple of Helen’s so I decided on one

  • What does the name Griffiths bring to mind?

= Griffins biscuits! (a well known NZ biscuit brand)

Also, To remember the ‘ths’ of the ‘Griffiths’ I had the humorous experience of the young group having difficulty pronouncing this part of the name.

When it came to recalling the name again the next day -

Yep the image of the Helen I knew, the image of Griffins biscuits and the memory of the attempt to pronounce the ‘ths’ part of the name came to mind!

While doing this I was imagining myself in the place I was in at the time also - another trigger for the memory.

Sure, it’s likely I would have remembered the name without setting up the associations however the beauty of doing this is that it’s going to be able to stick longer term also.

I brought it back to the conversation a couple of weeks later -

Briefly bringing something back into mind, a couple of weeks later, a month later, a year later…reinforcing it more and more.

If this sounds like a little too much work? I get it!

But it only takes practicing with 1 person and 1 name to start with.

And of course you don’t have to do it for every single person you meet.

You could do it for ONE person a year even - just that ONE person who might seem like someone you want to connect with.

Because who knows, making an effort and real impression on that one person…could create a relationship, that could change your life.
