Memory & confirmation bias
Our brain will look for evidence to prove whatever it is we think.
It’s called confirmation bias.
Are we thinking our memory is bad?
Our brain will look for ALL the evidence it can to support this.
This is what I used to be thinking and what my brain was doing.
I was constantly thinking and telling myself my memory was bad.
My brain was zoning in on every single little instance where my memory ‘failed me’.
Those times when a word didn’t come to me straight away.
Those times when I felt I couldn’t even recall the movie I’d watched the night before.
Each time, I would fret.
It was not a good spiral to be in.
Do you relate??
WELL IT’S OK.
Because here is the MAGIC!
Our brain’s confirmation bias will work if we choose to think the opposite.
If we choose to think the positive.
If we choose to think ‘my memory is improving’ or ‘my memory is good’ -
Our brain will identify ALL the evidence for this instead.
While for a few cases we might not want to be in complete denial if we need to get checked out BUT we do need to bear in mind our memory is never going to be perfect.
There are also so many things we can do to improve it.
We have a choice.
Do we want to think ‘my memory is bad’ and live with our brain looking for evidence for that?
OR
Do we want to think ‘my memory is improving’ or ‘my memory is good’ and live with our brain looking for evidence for that?
IT’S A CHOICE WE CAN CHOOSE TO MAKE.
