What I’ve learnt about habits

Have you ever been one to want to build a new habit or routine?

Maybe you tried and it didn’t quite pan out…?

It’s ok!

We’ve all been there.

It’s not a failure.

Accepting ‘imperfect’ is one of the keys to unlocking a love for habits and their power.

Another key is in understanding how to easily build habits in a sustainable way.

We can then use the power of habits to power up our memory.

It’s a matter of the memory improving habit you’d like to establish and going for it.

So, here’s what I’ve learnt over many years of building and thinking about habits/routines:

  • There’s no failing - it’s all trial and error (or trial and have another go!)

  • It takes time and intention

  • It’s starting small

  • There are cycles - when a habit or routine is working, then not needed, then needed again and so we can go back to it

  • It can be a delicate balance of leaning into the habit/routine and sometimes saying you know what, it’s ok, I can mix it up today

  • It’s nothing personal - it’s just managing how the primitive part of our human brain is wired (it doesn’t want discomfort or challenge, it just wants us to survive with the smallest amount of energy expended!)

  • It’s tuning into whether the little push to do the thing will be good for us or not (and being really honest with ourselves)

  • It’s asking the question ‘how will I feel after I do the thing?

(You’ll often know you’ll feel better for it. But if not, asking, what is going to make me feel the best after I’ve done it?

  • We become our habits so they have the power to shape our lives in whatever way we wish!
