The more bizarre the better
When it comes to ‘thinking in pictures’, the more bizarre the better!
As I will continue to say, thinking in pictures works magic for our memory.
When we think of ourselves as hunter gatherers, it was our visual memory we absolutely needed for our survival.
It was our visual memory that allowed us to work out which foods were and were not safe to eat.
It’s suggested this is why our visual memory is so effective for memory techniques.
Now getting to the point of ‘the more bizarre the better’…
As adults, we may not be used to going wild with our imagination.
But we can absolutely make this easy using a step by step process.
I thought I’d provide a simple example for you.
Here goes!
1. What do you want to remember?
E.g. a speech topic - dog breeds
2. What is the first image that comes to mind for this?
A group of dogs of different breeds at a park
3. How can you expand on this image and add something bizarre?
A group of dogs of different breeds at a park
+ in a circle, holding paws
4. How can you make this a little more bizarre again?
A group of dogs of different breeds at a park in a circle, holding paws
+ dancing around the circle
5. How can you add extra senses?
A group of dogs of different breeds at a park, in a circle, holding paws
+ dancing around the circle
+ barking and singing hysterically, maybe even singing your favourite song!
You get the idea!
Now, simply lock this full image in all it’s vivid detail in your mind and let the magic happen.
