Eliminating the ‘I can’t remember’ & ‘I forgot’
How often do we use the phrases -
‘I can’t remember’
&
‘I forgot’
Maybe it’s…
I can’t remember the name of the person…
I can’t remember the details of the story…
I can’t remember exactly where I left my phone…
I can’t remember when that party was…
Eeeeek. It does make me squirm these days.
Essentially, there’s ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with using these phrases.
HOWEVER,
What if we didn’t say them?
What if they just were’nt in our vocabularly?
Would we come across to others differently?
Most importantly though -
How would this change our inner beliefs….?
I am a big believer in the power of our words and thoughts.
So I believe this is worth serious consideration.
It initially came about while staying with a friend a while back.
I caught myself say ‘Oh, I forgot to bring the washing in’
In this moment, I realised I hadn’t forgot - I’D ACTUALLY REMEMBERED.
Sure, I’d had intentions to bring the washing in earlier in the day.
Technically, that’s what I had ‘forgotten’.
The situation had created absolutely no issue though.
Saying ‘I’d forgotten’ was putting a unnecessary negative twist on things.
As ridiculous as it might sound, I was taking away the opportunity to celebrate the fact I did remember!
To send the message to my brain that…see I do remember.
To reinforce the beliefs of a good memory.
There are of course other scenarios.
Therefore, I’ve created a list of examples and suggestions for you!
Whether it be elimination or rephrasing.
Someone has to remind you of something
Instead of:
‘Sorry I forgot’
= ‘Thank you for reminding me’
You can’t recall a name (or detail)
Instead of:
‘I can’t remember’
= ‘The name will come to me later’
Alternatively, simply focus on the information you do know and communicate this.
Is there REALLY any need to comment on what you haven’t remembered??
From my own experience, it really is easier than you’d think to take the ‘negative’ phrase out of your vocabulary, rephrase it or eliminate it altogether.
And it can create much for self assuredness that really is quite a nice feeling.
