5 top tips for remembering a dance routine
This is for regular dance class goers or those aspiring to be…
Want to pick up moves more quickly?
Remember a dance in full?
Without having to watch the teacher like a hawk or frantically follow the other dancers?
Remembering dance choreography hasn’t been easy for me but like anything, it’s just about learning some tips to help you, putting them into practise and believing in yourself.
Here are my 5 top tips.
1. Check your thoughts
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I’m never going to get this’, ‘ look at how good everyone else is’ but these thoughts are not helpful. Take a breathe, be kind to yourself, focus on the teacher and try not to worry about what everyone else is doing. Keep reminding yourself YOU CAN DO THIS and you can have a good time because that’s likely why you’re there in the first place.
2. Feel the moves within your body
It might sound weird but really feeling the moves within your body will be more effective than thinking through them.
3. Dance the moves fully
As you’re learning, dance the moves ‘fully’ as much as possible! This trains your body/muscle memory to remember it how it’s meant to be.
4. Visualise the routine in your mind
If you have a spare moment in class, you can visualise the routine in your mind. This allows you to make sense of it yourself while there isn’t anyone else there to follow. You can also replay it back in your mind after class or in the days that follow if it’s a routine you’re going to go back to.
5. Celebrate
I’ve said it once and I’ll keep saying it. Take a moment to celebrate - even if you feel like you have a long way to go. Focus on what you’ve just done and tell yourself you did good. Feel a sense of happiness and satisfaction that you got out there to learn something new and do something you love. Not everyone does this!
