Start doing - how to build habits for a better memory
I am a massive advocate for learning how to create good habits.
It’s creating the habits we want to create that allow us to achieve what we want to achieve.
One thing we might want to achieve is - a better memory!
And yes, most of us, absolutely need to and can learn the ‘how to’ for habits.
It’s part of the human condition that makes it feel SO hard to do the things we know we want to do.
Our brain’s survival mechanism to want to keep us comfortable and safe.
That doesn’t want us to expend energy unless it’s a life or death scenario.
This part of the brain has not yet evolved to the current world we live in.
It doesn’t understand we’re typically not around lions and tigers and bears now.
We actually DO want to get out of our comfort zones to do things - that aren’t actually dangerous.
We actually DO want to use some energy to say do some exercise.
Imagine if you knew how to stop worrying about your memory and start doing the things to improve it?
How life changing would that be.
I have gone through the habit building process, know the power it has and can absolutely help you do the same.
Here are my top steps and tips!
- What habit do you want to create?
E.g. 1 hour a week to learn about a memory technique and try it
(Remember to make it achievable!)
- How would you like to schedule it in?
E.g. Every Thursday 4 - 5 pm
- Now here’s the juicy stuff:
- Imagine in advance all the possible thoughts and feelings that might come up when it comes time to carry our the habit. Then, plan how you will respond to these
- Include any scenarios where you actually won’t go ahead with the habit e.g. an invite to something you really can’t refuse or absolute exhaustion…These reasons have to be planned in advance and you need to be honest with yourself at the time! Expect your brain will come up with all sorts of excuses but most will be unworthy of not following through!
- Remind yourself why you wanted to do this in the first place and really tune into the possibility of what you could gain from it
- Start small
E.g. if it’s watching a video about memory techniques on your laptop and still feels overwhelming - tell yourself, I can just get my laptop and open it…etc. etc.
- Celebrate!
Have a little ‘woo hoooo’ moment to yourself to celebrate, even for the smallest of actions! Trust me, this will go SO SO far and keep you on track with that good habit.
You will be achieving that goal of a better memory in no time!
