Learning to remember names - 4 things to know!

Are you starting out with memory techniques for remembering names?

This one is for you!

Here are 4 of my personal learnings:

1. Treat it as trial and error

All the different memory tricks may feel a little overwhelming (which one to go with?!) however you don’t need to use a clear cut strategy.

Play around and have fun with them all.

Try one strategy or a mix.

Go simple, go detailed.

Go with whatever comes to you.

Build on it later on or don’t.

If something doesn’t work, try something else.

As time goes on, you’ll get into the swing of it and find what’s most natural and most effective for you.

It’s all trial and error!

2. Thought you had your technique down but you’ve still gone blank on the name? It’s all good, it happens.

Overall you will be making gains. Keep moving forward.

3. Be open if you still need to ask for a name again

Remember, even if you’ve got the intention to make an effort to remember names, you’ll still be ahead of the game compared to most people.

Therefore, there is no shame to ask for a name again or get clarification.

If you really don’t want to ask again though…

What other resources or opportunities do you have available to you?

Could you refer to a message group list?

Or could you listen out for others using the person’s name?

4. That satisfactory moment of shock

A warning that you will start to notice the moment of shock people have when you’ve remembered their name.

A good shock of course.

Perhaps you’ve met someone once and used their name the next time you see them.

People are not used to this!

They may literally take a step back in disbelief that you know their name and actually acknowledge they matter as a person, then fumble a little to make sure they’ve got yours because wow this person feels I matter so, they now matter to me too.

So there you go!

Number 4 is obviously my favourite.

It shows the power in remembering names.

It shows that you can make a difference to someone.

You never know what sort of relationship this could kick start.

And the amazing places that relationship could take you.
